Every few years, the fitness world gets a new thing that everybody is talking about. Right now, that thing is Hyrox. Your coworker did one. Your neighbor is training for one. Someone in your group chat has posted a sled push video with way too many fire emojis.
And naturally, the question we keep getting is: "So, is it better than CrossFit?"
Here is the friendly, no-drama answer: they are two different sports with two different personalities, and plenty of people love both. Let's break it down so you can figure out which one belongs in your life - spoiler alert BOTH can coexist and BOTH are amazing in their own ways.
Hyrox is a fitness race. The format is the same everywhere in the world, which is a big part of its appeal. You run 1 kilometer, then do a workout station, then run another kilometer, and repeat that eight times. The stations always come in the same order:
Because the course and the order never change, you can compare your time with someone across the country, or with last season's version of you. It has exploded in popularity. Over 550,000 people competed in 2025, and this past June the World Championships filled a stadium in Stockholm with athletes from around the globe.
CrossFit is built on the opposite idea. Instead of one fixed course, it is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. One day is heavy squats and a short sprint. The next is gymnastics and a long row. The next is a partner workout where you cheer for each other and cuss quietly.
It mixes three big buckets: weightlifting, gymnastics (body control, like pull-ups and handstands), and conditioning (rowing, running, biking, jumping). The idea is to be decently good at a lot of things instead of excellent at one.
Here is where it gets fun. CrossFit is a great foundation for Hyrox. You build the engine, the strength, and the grit that every station demands. Plenty of CrossFit athletes crossed over to the Hyrox World Championships this year and did very well. And if you start with CrossFit and decide you want to race, you will already have the base.
It goes the other way too. If you tried Hyrox and fell in love with training, CrossFit gives you something to do the other 51 weeks of the year.
Here is the thing nobody says out loud. You do not need to pick a sport before you build a base. If running 8 kilometers and pushing a sled sounds like a lot today, that is fine. The first goal is to get strong, get your lungs working, and learn to move well. Do that, and both options open up.
If you are still stuck, run this little test:
Whatever you choose, the best program is the one you will actually keep doing.
